    Senén Barro Ameneiro

    Mr. Senén Barro Ameneiro

    Obtained a degree and a doctorate (award with special distinction) on Physics from Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (USC). Rector of USC from 2002 to 2010. Chairman of RedEmprendia, Ibero-American Network of Universities for Business Incubation, since 2008. Chairman of TIC group from Conference of Rectors of Spanish Unversities (CRUE) from 2003 to 2005. He became member of CRUE's Permanent Committee in May, 2005, and was appointed Vice-chairman of CRUE in May, 2008, resigning in 2010.

    He founded and manages Group of Intelligent Systems, which has currently 40 members. Editor of 5 books and author of more than 200 scientific articles. He was member of Spanish Association for Fuzzy Technologies and Logic and of the European Society for Fuzzy Logic and Technology from 1996 to 1999, and member of the Scientific Committee of the European Centre for SoftComputing from September, 2005, to October, 2009.

    José Narro Robles

    Mr. José Narro Robles

    He obtained a degree with honours on surgery from the Faculty of Medicine of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Between 1976 and 1978, he studied a postgraduate course on Community Medicine in University of Birmingham, England. He is a Tennured Professor with more than 30 years of service at Universidad Nacional, being once appointed its General Manager. Since february, 2003, he was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and, in november, 2007, he was appointed Rector of UNAM for the period 2007-2011.

    He has authored and coauthored 91 scientific papers and book chapters and 154 popular publications. He has taken part in nearly 550 forums, in Mexico and abroad. Since 1992, he is member of the National Academy of Medicine and, in 2004, he was appointed member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences. In the federal public administration he has been general secretary of the Mexican Institute of Social Security, undersecretary of the Department of the Interior and undersecretary of Health Services. He has been awarded multiple distinctions and condecorations, nationally and internationally, among them “Eduardo Liceaga” distinction from Council of General Salubrity, Honorary Doctor at Universidad Ricardo Palma of Peru, and foreign academician of the Spanish Royal National Academy of Medicine.

    Mr. Dídac Ramírez i Sarrió

    Didac Ramírez i Sarrió (Barcelona, 1946) is Head of Financial Economy and Accountancy in Universitat de Barcelona. He is Doctor of Economic and Entrepreneurial Sciences and Doctor of Education Sciences, both in UB.

    He has a wide experience in academic management at UP: Vice-dean of FCEE (1988-1989); Vice-rector of Economics and Management (1990-1994); delegate of University School of Hotel Management and Tourism (1995-1999); and Head of the Department of Economic, Financial and Actuarial Mathematics (2001-present).

    As well, he has collaborated in managerial tasks outside UB: treasurer of FCB (2003), Chairman of Catalonian Society of Philosophy (2001-2007), member of the Board of Directors of Quinta de Salud la Alianza and Coordinator of Auditing, Financial Control and Risks (2007-present); and Receiver of  Fundación Privada Inservida, being appointed by the Ministry of Justice of Generalitat de Catalunya and ratifyied by Judge Baltasar Garzón (2007-present).

    He has combined this managerial activity with teaching, with more than 30 years of experience in university training and research. He is Permanent Academician of the Royal Academy for Economic and Financial Sciences and main researcher of IAFI research groups and many others.

    He is Rector of Universitat de Barcelona since 2008.

    Mr. Federico Gutiérrez-Solana Salcedo

    Mr. Federico Gutiérrez-Solana Salcedo

    Born in Bilbao in February 11, 1953, he obtained a degree on Road, Canal and Port Engineering from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid in June, 1975 (Distinction).

    Professor from 1984 and Head of Department from 1989, he leads a group that has achieved European renown thanks to its efforts regarding mechanical performance of materials and structural integrity.

    He has directed 14 doctoral thesises, 10 European research programmes and several national programmes.

    He has authored more than 170 articles in specialized journals (50% of them, international journals) and as many communications in national and international conferences.

    From 1997 to 2001, he was Vice-rector for Teaching Staff of Universidad de Cantabria and Vice-rector for Planning and Development from 2001 to 2003. In 2003, he was elected Rector.

    For four years, he has been President of the Engineering and Achitecture Comission of the Council of Universities. Since 2006, he is member of the Permanent Comission of the Conference of Rectors of the Spanish Universities (CRUE), being its Vice-chairman from October, 2007, and its Chairman since 2009.

    As Rector and Chairman of CRUE, he has taken part as lecturer in numerous national and international forums and has published analysises on university management in books, journals and newspapers. Also, he represented Spain in EUA'a Council and in the ministerial delegations monitoring EEES. He is Universia's Vice-president and has been Chairman of the Academical Committee of the II Guadalajara Meeting of Rectors (Mexico).

    D. João Grandino Rodas

    João Grandino Rodas possui quatro graduações: Música, pela Faculdade de Música Sagrado Coração de Jesus (1964); em Educação, pela Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras da USP (1969); em Direito, pela Faculdade de Direito da USP (1969) e, em Letras, pela Faculdade de Filosofia Nossa Senhora Medianeira dos Padres Jesuítas (1970). É mestre em Ciências Político-Econômicas pela Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Coimbra (1970); em Direito, pela Harvard Law School (1978) e, em Diplomacia, pela The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (1985). Fez Doutorado em Direito pela USP (1973) e Livre-Docência em Direito Internacional pela Faculdade de Direito da USP (1976).

    Desde 1971, vem desenvolvendo intensa carreira docente. Por dez anos lecionou didática, história da educação e educação internacional na Faculdade de Educação da USP. Entre 1988 e 1993, foi professor de Direito Internacional na UNESP. Na Faculdade de Direito da USP, desde 1971, percorreu todos os graus da carreira: leciona na graduação e na pós-graduação; foi Chefe do Departamento de Direito internacional (1998/2002 e 2006/2008); tendo assumido a direção da Faculdade, em 2006 até janeiro de 2010, quando assumiu a Reitoria da Universidade.

    Foi Fulbright-Fletcher Fellow junto à The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (1977-78) e Visiting Professor junto ao Institut de Droit de la Paix et du Development, Nice, França (1974); ao The Brookings Institution, Washington, D.C. (1976); a Columbia University School of Law, New York, N.Y. (1985-86); ao Max-Planck-Institut für ausländisches und internationales Privatrecht , Hamburgo (1991-92) e a Facolta di Giurisprudenza da Universidade de Trento, Itália (2008).

    Iniciou a prática jurídica como advogado de empresa, tendo sido gerente do Departamento Jurídico da Ford Brasil S.A. Ingressou na Magistratura do Trabalho (1980) e na Justiça Federal (1982), onde foi titular da Terceira Vara Federal da então Seção Judiciária do Rio Grande do Sul e da 15a Vara da Seção Judiciária de São Paulo (1982/1989). Foi promovido a Desembargador Federal do TRF da 3ª Região em 1989.

    Chefiou a Consultoria Jurídica do Ministério das Relações Exteriores (1993/1998), tendo participado e chefiado várias delegações brasileiras a reuniões diplomáticas internacionais. Foi chefe de Delegação junto a Comissão Preparatória da ONU para o Estabelecimento de um Tribunal Penal Internacional e Comissão da ONU para o Direito do Comércio Internacional-UNCITRAL.

    Por indicação do Presidente da República, foi membro da Comissão Especial de Mortos e Desaparecidos Políticos do Ministério da Justiça, criada pela Lei no 9.140/1995, que decidiu centenas de processos de reconhecimento da responsabilidade por mortes e desaparecimentos por motivação política. De 2000 a 2004, foi presidente do Conselho Administrativo de Defesa Econômica (CADE). No âmbito judiciário internacional, foi membro do Comitê Jurídico Interamericano da OEA (1996/2004), tendo sido seu vice-presidente e presidente; desde 2000, é juiz do Tribunal Administrativo do Sistema Econômico Latino Americano – SELA e, desde 2004, atua como juiz do Tribunal Permanente de Revisão do MERCOSUL, onde foi presidente, em 2007 e 2008.

    Desde 2000, pertence ao Conselho Diretor da Comissão Fulbright para o Intercâmbio entre os Estados Unidos e o Brasil. Possui vários livros e trabalhos publicados.

    Mr. Juan Casares Long

    (A Coruña, 1950). Mr. Casares obtained a degree on chemistry from Universidade de Santiago de Compostela in 1972, a PhD in chemistry from Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona and a PhD in chemical engineering from Unversity of Salford. After working for Saudi Arabia University of Petroleum and Minerals during the eighties, came back to USC as professor.

    Head of Chemical Engineering in Universidad de Sevilla and Universidad de Cantabria, professor Casares worked on the design, development and management of the Galician Centre for Supercomputing, which he directed from 1993 to 1997, an on the startup of Galician Network of Broadband Communications Network of Science and Technology (RECETGA). Besides, he directed Center of Environmental Information and Technology, belonging to Xunta de Galicia (1997-2001), and promoted Weather Observation and Prediction Service (MeteoGalicia).

    He is in charge of the research group for Environmental Modelling and has authored 1 book, 12 technical monographs and 60 scientific papers.

    In June 25, 2010, he was appointed Rector of USC.

    Mr. Jaume Pagès Fita

    Born in Girona in 1946. Married. Three kids.

    He studied Education, Industrial Engineering and Computing, and obtained a doctorate on Industrial Engineering in 1975, his dissertation being directed by Professor Gabriel Ferraté.

    Professor at Universidad Politécnica de Catalunya since 1971. He has hold several posts at Mechanics, Mathematics and Automation. Currently, he is Head of the Department of Systems Engineering and Automation.

    His research activity has focused on the fields of signal treatment, linear and non-linear filters, analysis and solving of control problems, planning of interplanetary missions and automated guidance for industrial vehicles.

    He has had several responsibilities concerning university management: Vice-rector of Academic Planning of Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya from 1986 to 1994; Rector of Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya for two consecutive periods, since May, 1995, to March, 2002.

    Chairman and Founder of the Association against Anorexia and Bulimia (ACAB).

    Honorary Doctor at Nagaoka University of Technology (Japan).

    Full member of the Institute of Catalonian Studies.

    CEO of the Universal Forum of Cultures Barcelona 2004, since April 24, 2002.

    D. José Mª. Sanz Martínez

    Licenciado con grado en Física por la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Doctor en Ciencias Naturales por la Universidad de Stuttgart.

    Entre sus cualificaciones, recibió una beca postdoctoral de la OTAN para el Departamento de Ingeniería Química de la Universidad de Florida. Desde 1991, es Catedrático de Física Aplicada de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid cuyo Departamento pasó a dirigir en 1998.

    Desde el 2002 hasta el 2006 fue Vicerrector de Infraestructura y Promoción Tecnológica de la Universidad Autónoma y Vicerrector de Investigación entre el 2006 y 2009.

    En el año 2009, José Mª Sanz fue nombrado Rector de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

    Autor de más de 150 publicaciones científicas en distintas revistas internacionales, ha sido Responsable Científico de más de veinte proyectos de investigación subvencionados por agencias europeas, estatales y locales.

    Desde 2001 es    Editor Europeo de la    revista Surface and Interface Analysis (Jhon Wiley Londres).

    D. Ignacio Sánchez Díaz

    D. Ignacio Sánchez Díaz

    El doctor Ignacio Sánchez, rector de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile y profesor titular de la Facultad de Medicina, tiene 49 años y está casado con la doctora Salesa Barja, médico nutrióloga infantil de la UC, con quien tiene siete hijos. Es médico cirujano y pediatra de la Universidad Católica, especialista en enfermedades respiratorias del niño por la Universidad de Manitoba, en Canadá.

    Se ha desempeñado en el Hospital Clínico de la Universidad Católica como Jefe de la Sección Respiratorio Pediátrico y del Servicio de Pediatría. En la Escuela de Medicina, ocupó los cargos de Jefe del Departamento de Pediatría y Director de la Escuela de Medicina desde el año 2004. En 2008 fue elegido como decano de la Escuela de Medicina.
     Forma parte del comité editorial de distintas publicaciones y ha escrito más de 200 textos en revistas científicas extranjeras y nacionales. Es autor de un libro guía de la especialidad pediátrica y de más de veinte capítulos de textos sobre pediatría y enfermedades respiratorias. Colabora como consejero en la Fundación Cardenal Juan Francisco Fresno y en la Obra Pequeño Cottolengo. Preside el directorio de la Clínica UC San Carlos de Apoquindo y el consejo directivo de la Fundación Josefina Martínez de Ferrari.
    El doctor Sánchez asumió la Rectoría de la Universidad Católica para el actual período 2010, sucediendo en el cargo al doctor Pedro Pablo Rosso, quien se desempeñó a cargo de la UC desde el 11 de marzo de 2000
