UNAM is one of the institutions that best represent Mexico; its institutional strength, the quality and variety of the degrees and research topics it supplies, and its commitment with cultural dissemination, humanism and new technologies, turn it into the country's greatest academic centre and the most prestigious and renowned in Ibero-America. UNAM has branches in Mexico City and in other twenty districts of the Republic of Mexico; as well, it has five regional development centres in Michoacán, Querétaro, Morelos, Baja California and Yucatán, four in United States of America, one in Canada and one in Spain.

UNAM was established in September 21, 1551, and since then it has been awarded numerous distinctions and prizes. It has been declared World Cultural Heritage and recently was granted the Príncipe de Asturias Award. Likewise, it has been home for individuals of great talent and moral quality such as the Nobel-awarded Mexicans Octavio Paz, Alfonso García Robles or Mario Molina.

Committed with the economic and social development of Mexico, UNAM has encouraged technological transfer and technological services supply in order to meet the needs of the various industrial sectors, and it has created an environment in which the ideas and enthusiasm of the academic community are turned into enterprises.
